Frequently Asked Questions
Inspired Learning Academy is a teen-focused microschool with a hybrid learning model in Allen, Texas. We operate as a small, relationship-centered school serving grades 6–12, combining in-person learning, mentorship, and independent study. While we are structured as a private program, our microschool model emphasizes small class sizes, personalized pathways, and student ownership rather than traditional lecture-based instruction.
The following are core traits of Microschools (all of which Inspired Learning Academy has):
- Microschools have no more than 150 students total, but are often smaller—from around 10 to a few dozen students;
- Classes have no more than 15 students;
- Multiple ages learn together in a single classroom;
- Teachers act more as guides than lecturers;
- There's a strong emphasis on project-based learning, often supported by digital tools; and
- Education is highly personalized.
Inspired Learning Academy is currently in the process of pursuing accreditation, which is a required step before applying for eligibility to receive Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) funds. Once accreditation is finalized, we will apply for TEFA eligibility.
We anticipate being able to confirm our TEFA eligibility status in the spring of 2026, in time for the 2026–2027 school year, pending final approval. Families interested in using education funding options are encouraged to contact us to discuss timing and next steps.
Students follow their personalized schedule of activities including group classes/projects, individual study, group discussions and mentor meetings. See How It Works.(https://office14758.wixsite.com/ila-2/how-it-works)
Learning at Inspired Learning Academy is structured around a hybrid microschool model that balances academic expectations, mentorship, and real-world application.
Students attend on campus several days per week for collaborative classes, discussions, projects, and mentoring, and complete guided independent work on remote learning days. Rather than following a rigid bell schedule or one-size-fits-all pacing, learning is organized through a combination of:
• Facilitated classes and seminars focused on core academic skills and concepts
• Mentor-guided goal setting and reflection, helping students plan, prioritize, and take ownership of their learning
• Projects and applied work that allow students to explore interests and demonstrate understanding
• Independent study time, supported by clear expectations and accountability
• Ongoing feedback and documentation of growth, rather than relying solely on traditional tests or grades
This structure allows students to meet academic requirements while also developing independence, time management, communication skills, and confidence — skills that are essential for success beyond school.
Inspired Learning Academy is a strong fit for students in grades 6–12 who benefit from a smaller learning environment, value relationships with mentors and peers, and are ready to take increasing ownership of their learning.
Many of our students are:
• Curious, creative, or independent thinkers
• Seeking more connection, challenge, or balance than traditional school provides
• Motivated by purpose and real-world learning rather than grades alone
• Ready to engage in reflection, goal-setting, and collaborative work
Because our microschool model emphasizes independence and self-direction, we may not be the best fit for students who need frequent one-on-one academic intervention or a highly structured, teacher-directed environment. We’re always happy to talk with families about whether Inspired is a good fit.
Inspired Learning Academy is a secular, independent microschool. We are not affiliated with any church or religious organization.
We currently lease classroom space from First United Methodist Church in Allen, which graciously rents space to several community organizations.
Our program itself is not religiously based.
Inspired Learning Academy emphasizes authentic learning and meaningful feedback rather than relying solely on traditional grading. Students receive detailed narrative feedback from facilitators and mentors on individual assignments and at the end of each semester. Some work is scored numerically when appropriate, particularly when needed for external courses or documentation.
Students demonstrate learning through multiple formats, including:
• Digital Open Badges that document mastery of skills and competencies
• Portfolios of student work that show growth over time
• Presentation Nights, where students share accomplishments and practice public speaking
For college-bound high school students, we ensure that all required documentation is in place. Students establish a GPA through graded coursework such as dual credit or online courses, as well as through co-assessed grades for Inspired Learning Academy courses. In co-assessed grading, students submit evidence of learning and facilitators or mentors provide final grade approval to ensure academic integrity.
Students who meet Inspired Learning Academy’s graduation requirements receive a diploma from Inspired Learning Academy. We offer three graduation pathways — a Traditional University Path, a Community College Path, and a Flex Path — allowing students to align their academic experience with post-secondary goals such as college, vocational programs, entrepreneurship, or other purposeful next steps.
Each diploma is accompanied by a comprehensive transcript and a personalized ePortfolio that highlights academic achievement, skill development, and real-world learning in a format that is both professional and compelling for colleges, programs, and employers.
Yes! Students who have attended microschools similar to ours or who have been homeschooled have attended every kind of university, including top Ivy league schools, where admission officers actually seek out these non-traditional applicants. Inspired Learning Academy is currently pursuing accreditation through the Texas Microschool Accreditation Service (TxMAS). Accreditation is an important step in formally recognizing our school’s structure, policies, and educational practices.
We will share updates with families as the accreditation process progresses and once our status is finalized.
